Laboratory of Organic Functional (Macro)Molecules

One of main areas of expertise of the Organic Functional Molecules group led by Prof. Guillaume Delaittre deals with the controlled functionalization of materials surfaces. In order to provide specificity and therefore sensitivity to THz-based sensors in terms of pathogen detection, it is important to remove any possible background interference - for instance arising from the adsorption of other proteins or small molecules - so that only analytes of interest lead to a signal. For sensors designed for cell-based investigations it is also important to provide adequate surface properties for the maintenance of cell properties. Both aspects can be tackled by the attachment of functional polymer layers based on brush or hydrogel architectures. The functionality is provided by the incorporation of specific binding sites for the analytes, often in the form of biomolecules.
