The field of Information Technology encompasses far more than the classical degree courses in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering can cover. The study model developed especially for IT careers is designed to make young people fit for an attractive job market. The IT degree programme is supported by experts in the fields of Electrical, Information, and Media Technology as well as Mathematics. The international orientation according to the Bachelor's/Master's model meets the requirements of the globalization of the IT industry.
The three modularised study fields of the Bachelor's programme in Information Technology (Information Science, Systems and Components and Computing) cover the following essential subject areas: software engineering, software technologies, Internet technologies, telecommunications (mobile communications, data and communication networks), scientific computing, multimedia, hardware, artificial intelligence, process informatics. The clear application orientation, a strong hardware orientation and interdisciplinarity are understood as special characteristics compared to a classical computer science course.
In view of the enormous need for research and development, the Master's programme in Information Technology must meet the requirements of training scientifically oriented specialists and managers who can take on information technology development, research and management tasks in all value-added areas of medium-sized and large companies on the basis of sound scientific training. On the basis of in-depth theoretical principles, a sound engineering-scientific repertoire of methods for research and development tasks is imparted. In addition, fundamental experience for scientific work is gained. In order to correspond to the dynamic innovation developments of the IT sector and the usually high complexity of the problems, both specialisations are promoted and interdisciplinary aspects from applied innovation research are taught.
